How Does Constant Contact Billing Work?

October 29, 2014

Many people are confused about how Constant Contact invoices its users because billing is based on the number of unique email addresses in a user’s contact lists during any given billing period. The key word here is unique—and that’s where most of the confusion begins.

Some Constant Contact users attempt to game the system by uploading a limited number of email addresses to their contact lists—say, 400 addresses—sending an email, deleting the list, then uploading a different list of 400 addresses and repeating the process. These users mistakenly believe they’ve avoided higher fees because at no point were more than 400 addresses in their account at one time.

However, Constant Contact tracks unique email addresses over the entire billing period. In this example, the system has actually seen 800 unique addresses, and billing is calculated accordingly. Even if only 400 contacts existed at the time of billing, the total number of unique addresses used during the month is what matters.

Constant Contact pricing is not determined by how many contacts you have at the end of the billing period, nor by how many emails you send. Billing is based solely on the total number of unique email addresses added during that period. Repeatedly uploading and deleting smaller lists does not reduce costs—the system cannot be tricked.
